Ferry Road.
Postcard photo taken approx., 1940's showing Ferry Road, Hullbridge
 Unknown
Ferry Road, Hullbridge

The postcard photo was taken approx., 1920 at the time of the development of South Hullbridge. The photographer is supposedly standing in Ferry Road, Hullbridge. However there are only three hills in Hullbridge. The first is the rise from the river to the school house which this is not as there are not enough buildings around. The second is at Coventry Hill which had a small building on the brow and Hillcrest a little way before the building which could describe this photo , however the buidling is shown as running in the opposite direction to the one in the picture so the deduction is this is High Elms Cottage in Ferry Road.

The postcard photo was taken approx., 1940's. The Photographer is standing in the main road, Hullbridge. The main road is Ferry Road and the shop on the right with its awning out looks very much like that built at 130 Ferry Road which in 1937 was a post office and the building further on is like that of the Mayfield Club with the road on the left being Ambleside Gardens.

The postcard photo was taken approx., 1911 it is of the school as it was with the entrance to the side. The house next door is that of the school master. The land preceding the school had not yet been developed. The back of the above postcard sent 16 Oct 1911 by Mr Best to Mrs N Crampton in Grimsby. He says
"My Dear M. I thought you would like a photograph of our school and house. This is the first I think that has been taken, The photographer has been down to the river to take the children as they are being rowed across. When they come I must send you one. Should like to have a line from you so do write soon. Kindest regards to Mr C and love to your self ??"

A photo taken approx., 1924 . The photographer is standing in the middle of Ferry Road near Pooles Lane and shooting the road down towards the River Crouch on the right is the entrance to "Well Cottages" which contained J.T.Jones general stores. On the left is the Mission Hall built 1890 with places for 60 villagers. The Mission Hall first came into existence around 1856 when the Rev. John Harding visited once a week to preach. In 1938 the large tree alongside fell on top of the Mission Hall during a storm. The building also longside the tree is "Shell Cottage" which is remarkably still there today. At the bottom near the river can be seen the Old Anchor Inn and Rose Cottage beyond that. Beyond the river can be seen the South Woodham Ferrers "Ferry Road".

A photo taken approx., 1924 . The photographer is standing in the middle of Ferry Road further back than previous (Bell116101) postcard. A lady is walking in her hat and coat either to the Anchor Inn or more likely to T J Jones's General Stores. which she is nearly outside on the right. Also a sign can be seen in the foreground for Park family Cars which was operated from the previous building. On the left can be seen the Mission Hall and Shell Cottage.

Well Cottages with J.T. Jones General Stores on the corner of Pooles Lane and Ferry Road.

A photo taken approx., 1924 . The photographer is standing in Ferry Road outside "Well Cottages". Mr T J Jones had a General store and next door was a Drapery Store. The tarred weatherboard was handy for chalking up the latest offers. Outside the Drapery is "Dunlop Tyres & Accesories kept in stock" "Bees, Sheds, Seeds" Well Cottages was the site of a fresh water well from which Mr Jones would sell water at 1d per bucket. Mr J Hemmings recalled to Mr D Boreham how when he first moved into his building in South Avenue he would have to walk all the way to Mr Jone's to get a bucket of drinking water as this was the only way he could get drinking water and it was excellent stuff. Mr Jone's store was the main food and hardware shop in the village. In 1937 Well Cottages was destroyed by fire, being made of wood that had been tarred and having many combustable items in stock like rubber tyres, paraffin etc., the building must have burnt very fiercely.
