Hullbridge Gardens Association (1941 - 2011)
Hullbridge allotments were opened in 1978 following a successful campaign by the Hullbridge Gardens Association. They are sited on the RHS of Lower road traveling towards Ashingdon just beyond Pevensey Gardens; the gated entrance just past bus shelter on RHS. There is adequate parking just inside the entrance for approximately twenty vehicles; users are expected to park neatly allowing for maximum vehicle usage as at weekends parking space is at a premium.
The site comprises two fields split into over 120 plots most of which are approx 180m2, but recently to cope with demand more have been split again to make half plots of 90m2. Water tanks are sited at various points to enable use of watering cans as watering hoses are not permitted.
Each plot is covered by a tenancy agreement whereby the allotment holder commits to various rules but basically to pay the fairly small annual rent, keep the plot tidy, free from weeds & productive. General site control is maintained by an elected Management Committee comprising allotment holders & Parish Councillors. Communal work parties are arranged several times per year to minimise allotment operating costs & to tackle various site issues; participants are eligible for a reduction in their following years allotment rent.
Representatives from the committee make regular plot inspections to ensure tenancy agreements are being fulfilled especially regarding productivity. Tenants of any neglected plots are advised to make improvements; repeated failure to respond may result in termination of tenancy & their plot being offered to someone on the waiting list.
There are annual competitions for best plots in two classes; one for previous winners & another for first time entrants for which cups are awarded. There is also the option of entering some of the produce in the HGA annual flower & vegetable show normally held in September.
The plot tenants are varied from retirees to young couples with children; it’s a very social place where advice is freely available with experience shared if wanted.
To apply for an allotment contact the Hullbridge Parish Council office @ 98, Ferry Road.
Note : Since allotments have recently seen a growth in popularity there is normally a waiting list; it may therefore be some time before your application is successful.
Current Allotment Committee Chairman is Mr. Ian Burrell.
