| 1961 21st June BEVERLEY, 16 IS THE QUEEN OF HULLBRIDGE. Attractive Beverley Hutton of Hullbridge is 17 in August and the whole village will turn out to celebrate. For Bev's birthday on August 5th, Hullbridge celebrate its Carnival Day and the new Carnival Queen is none other than ..Beverley. Beverley only 2 week's home from a holiday in sunny Spain, was chosen from 9 other local beauties at the selection dance held at the Village Hall on Saturday 17th June. Nearly 100 people watched as the girls walked slowly round the hall to admiring glances and plenty of wolf whistles. The young ladies were then interviewed by Mr Arthur Brooke and his wife Hilda, who were the judges. Mr Brooke is chairman of the hard working Southend Carnival Committee. And no one disagreed with their choice. Beverley, wearing a pretty blue brocade dress and on her wrist a lucky Spanish charm, was escorted to her "throne" on the stage by maids of honour 19 year old Valerie French and 16 year old Barbara Thacker. There chairman of the Hullbridge Carnival Committee, Mrs Dorothy Beckwith handed the blue and white ermine, jewel studded crown to Mr Brooke and he declared Bevereley "Queen". After posing for photographs "Queen" Beverley stepped off the stage onto the dance floor. Lucky "Lucky Harry" Randolph her boyfriend stepped forward to give her a congratulatory kiss.... and c-a-l-a-m-i-t-y ! So enthusiastic was he, that Bev's crown fell off her head and crashed to the floor ! "Queen" Beverley lives in Ferry Road over her mother's shop "Patricia" hairstylist. She has lived in Hullbridge for 2 years. Why did she take part ? Answered Beverley: "Many of our customers said I should. My sister Anne put my name forward." And sister Anne, aged 16, nearly missed the big evening. She was busily tidying up the salon after working all day setting the hair of her big sister's rivals in the contest. Miss Valerie French one of the Maids of Honour lives in Lower Park, Hullbridge and is a typist and telephonist in the city. Friends entered her name soon after she arrived in Hullbridge a year ago. Valerie wore a blue brocade dress for the evening. The other maid Miss Barbara Thacker, also a typist in the city, lives in Lower Road. "I entered for the fun of it and certainly did not expect to get anywhere" she laughed. The other competitors for the title were:- Barbara Smith, Susan Harris, Christine Hodson, Wendy Beckwith, Maureen Wrien, Pat Moore and Valerie Morris. | 1961 August 9th CARNIVAL TIME...AND THE VILLAGE GOES GAY What a happy birthday it was on Saturday for 17 year old Beverley Hutton of Ferry Road, Hullbridge. She celebrated it as "Queen" Beverley-Carnival Queen of Hullbridge. Officials of the New Hullbridge Social Society organised the Carnival to help swell the funds for the Village Hall. Commented chairman, Mrs D Beckwith, "I think this is probably the best Carnival we have had." The procession headed by Cowboy Marshall, Mr Foil, left the field opposite White Bridge, near Coventry Corner, and arrived at the Village Hall about three-quarters of an hour later. Along the route-Lower Road, Coventry Corner, Ferry Road, the Anchor forecourt and back to the Hall- hundreds of villagers waved and cheered "Queen" Beverley. The fancy dress was judged in the field owned by Mrs Beckwith, by Rayleigh's Barclays Bank manager, Mr Phillip Cole, and Mrs Cole. Their task was not an easy one as there were over 40 entries. During the evening a Carnival Dance was held with music provided by the Haralcon Trio. The fancy dress results are as follows:- UNDER 5's: 1, Susan and Patrick Adger (bride and groom), 2, Evelyne Swinscoe (barrow boy), 3, Kathleen Chaplin (Turkish Delight). 5-9 YEARS: 1, Diane Lark (Turkish Beauty), Roger and David Orrels (painer and decorator), 3, Tina Lee (broken china). 10-15 YEARS: 1, Christine and Janet Simpson (sculptor and model), 2, David Raines (convict), 3, Rita Wilson and Pat Hedges (hula hula girls). | 1964 June 10th IT'S QUEEN ANNE Chosen at the selection dance on Saturday night (6th June) to represent Hullbridge as Carnival Queen throughout the coming year was lovely 18 year old Anne Hutton of Ferry Road. Although from a crowded Village Hall, a large percentage of them teenagers, only six could be prevailed upon to enter the parade, the judge, Mr Gerald F. Fox, Clerk of Rochford Rural District Council who was accompanied by Mrs Fox, still proclaimed the task no easy one. The competitors were all such charming girls, he said. "Queen" Anne's two maids of honour are 19 year old Barbara Thacker of "Elm Gate", Lower Road and 17 year old Jennifer Simmance of Hilltop Avenue. It is understood that plans for an August Bank Holiday Carnival are already under way and several invitations have already been received for events outside the village so it looks as though the girls are in for a busy but enjoyable year. "I loved every minute of last year" was the comment of the retiring "Queen" Doreen when questioned by our reporter on Saturday. As a point of interest this is the second honour for the Hutton family in recent years, Anne's elder sister Beverley holding the Queenship three years ago. |

| 1964 August 3rd HULLBRIDGE 16th ANNUAL CARNIVAL QUEEN FLOAT A clear blue sky and sweltering sunshine just the kind of day that Hullbridge people have cried for in the past Carnival days. That was, Bank Holiday Monday and the villagers swarmed out and made the most of it. The carnival procession, though smaller than in some previous years, made a bright and colourful spectacle as it moved slowly through the village behind marching drums and buglers of the St John Ambulance Brigade Cadets, C130 (Southwark) Division under the Divisional Superintendent Mr Ripper. Linda Howard the Hornchurch Carnival Queen accepted the invitation to come down and join in adding her own touch of beauty to the show. Hullbridge's "Queen" Anne Hutton and Princesses Jennifer Simmance and Barbara Thacker looked thoroughly thrilled and happy as they rode in regal splendor at the procession's end. Here in this picture both Queens and entourage wait for the procession to start in Mrs Beckwith's field near White Bridge. |

Float, (Women and Fashions 1564-1964) was a new and very interesting idea and won a very worthy first prize. The judge of the floats and fancy dress parade, Lieut., P.T. Benson_Ryal, B.E.M. T.A., A.C.F. Commanding the Essex Yeomanry Troup of the 7th Essex Cadet Regiment had special praise for the turnout of everyone.
